Top 5 reasons not to avoid writing in this blog

barefoot-trailrider-treeless-saddle.jpgWell, it’s been a long time since I wrote in this blog and I apologize to the hoards of loyal readers (if you’re reading this you’re probably the only one). So I figure I could psyche myself up for this but writing a little list of the top 5 reasons to not avoid it any longer:

  1. I still care about the topic of this blog - a mishmashup of web 2.0, web culture, businessy, marketing and design. I have just been too busy actually living it to write it all down. But that will have to stop. I can’t avoid the void any longer!
  2. Writing this blog forces me to think. When you go through your professional life and you don’t take the time to stop and put it all down in words, a lot gets lost in the bustle. So this is a record of what is going on in my head.
  3. I’m applying to get into an MBA program right now and I need a place to write down all the brilliant things I will learn. I won’t know if I get in until May but I’m currently applying to McGill’s Japan MBA program which will allow me to keep working and study on the weekends. The bottom line is self-improvement is a good investment and if this MBA don’t kill me I don’t know what will.
  4. Oh man, I have two more reasons to go. Think fast Lance! Well, as some of you may know I have spent a lot of time in Second Life for the past year becoming a “world famous virtual artist”. In that little adventure I have been posting on a different blog all about art and being famous and stuff. But I first life is getting pretty exciting and I’ll explain to you why (patient reader) in my last reason.
  5. I have a new job title, Lead Innovation Strategist. Do I hear chuckles in the peanut gallery? Yes, that is a real title and I’m part of a merry gang of mixed nuts working hard to create new businesses at my company. This is one of the motivations for getting the MBA. I hope to use this blog to record deep and valuable insights I have on innovation and making bags of money. Unfortunately, most of this stuff is top secret so you’ll never see it on these pages. Well, maybe a little…

So I’m back in the saddle and I honestly hope you’ll comment and recommend these ramblings to your friends and family. Peace and love and stuff.

Something weird - tall people are smarter

http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/28/the-most-surprising-thing-i-learned-today/
The Freakonomics guy Steven Levitt explains his surprise to learn…
“It is well documented that tall people tend to hold high-status jobs and earn high wages. There are many possible explanations for this: height is a useful job attribute for some reason; other people mistakenly think tall people are more intelligent than they really are; being […]

Scarcity=Value

http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/08/the-scarcity-sh.html
According to Seth Godin, value comes there’s a scarcity of something - whether that be gold, free time, clean air, good judgement. Whenever a new innovation comes out there’s a gazillion copycats lining up to turn it into a commodity.
Excerpt…
“So how do you deal with the shortage of scarcity? Well, the worst strategy is whining–about […]

Pownce.com - late cuz I was on vacation

http://pownce.com/lanceshields/public/
OK, I’m there already! It took a while cuz I really was on vacation, quite literally in Vancouver, Canada. For all those dummies (like me) Pownce is a nifty new Kevin Rose (of Digg.com) file sharing social network that lets you share messages, links, files and a miniblog feature (like Facebook). What’s all the hubbub […]

The Rosetta Disk

http://www.rosettaproject.org/about-us/disk/concept

Looking through web guru Kevin Kelly’s website I discovered a really interesting project he’s involved with called the Rosetta Disk. It is one part of the Rosetta Project which is a web database cataloging all the world’s languages. Why do that? It seems that in the next century, 90% languages will be lost.
The Rosetta Disk […]
